Summer adventures
Thu. August 11, 2016
We are not halfway through the summer holidays yet, but as we are planning more adventures, having just invested ( is this the right word?) in a bell tent, that we should record our wonderful week in Cornwall staying with the Landmark Trust at The College in Week St Mary. The College was delightful. Week St Mary and its inhabitants charming. I read my first Daphne Du Maurier – Frenchman’s Creek found on the bookshelf at The College.
Some parents take their children on demand to Disney, Lego etc. Unfortunately our children have parents who ignore their requests to go to these places. Instead they take them to ancient churches, museums, National Trust and English Heritage days out. The enthusiasm for visiting the Church of St Morwenna in Morwenstow was is clearly visible – who needs Mickey Mouse! We had a lovely afternoon swimming in the sea at a local beach – a very different experience from our estuary sea swimming at home. National Trust visits included to Lanhydrock, Cotehele (Our favourite), Buckland Abbey.
Tintagel was as busy as we suspected and not ideal for two little ones coming down with sore throats and temperatures but otherwise excellent exercise. We began our search for the best Cornish pasty – we were starving after climbing all those steps. The pork, apple and Cornish cider at The Cornish Bakery is recommended. We tasted quite a few pasties in our week in Cornwall and our top two were from the village shop in Week St Mary and the one from Bray Farm Shop Launceston. Top of the Museums we managed to visit was Lawrence House Museum Launceston (visit the church if you go here because it is one of the best in the county) which was delightful.
